UHCL Students were given a creative break from pre-finals stress thanks to a “Book Bedazzling” event hosted by Sigma Tau Delta on April 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the SSCB Lobby. It was designed to help students unwind ahead of finals week through hands-on creativity.
“We thought that it would be a relaxing and therapeutic opportunity for students before finals,” said President of the Sigma Tau Delta UHCL Chapter, Chloe Stegner.
“Finals week can be an incredibly stressful time for students, and we wanted to provide the chance for them to take a break and unwind with a fun activity and return to studying with a fresh, renewed perspective.”
At the event, students decorated their own books and bookmarks using colorful gems, glue and tools provided by the organization.
Structured as a “bring your own book” activity, Sigma Tau Delta also supplied bookmarks to decorate for those who did not bring a book, allowing participants to still engage in the low-pressure environment.
“Students had a very fun, sparkly time at our event,” Stegner said. “What stood out to me was how excited everyone was to bedazzle a book or bookmark, and how creative they got with their designs.”
Events like Book Bedazzling reflect Sigma Tau Delta’s broader mission as an international English honor society focused on literature, writing and student engagement.
Founded in 1924, the organization’s UHCL Chapter has been around for more than 30 years, offering students access to scholarships, internships, writing competitions, publication opportunities, and literary-focused campus events.
Membership is open to UHCL students who meet the academic requirements, including at least three semesters of college coursework, a minimum of two literature courses (excluding LITR 3302) and a 3.5 GPA across the advanced literature classes.
Eligible students are contacted by the faculty advisor at the beginning of each semester and can join by paying a one-time $60 fee, which grants lifetime membership and the opportunity to wear special cords during graduation.
“Although doing well in your studies is important, it is more important to take time for your mental health and well-being,” said Stegner.
“Taking a moment to relax can allow students to return to their studies with a clear head and a better outlook.”
