Professor of communication and public relations, Anna Klyueva, Ph.D., led a 2-week education abroad program to Harlaxton, England this past summer as a part of UHCL’s Education Abroad and Scholar Services (EA&SS) .
The EA&SS offers various faculty-led programs for those interested in studying abroad that are “academically rigorous, financially accessible and integrated with courses of study,” according to their website.
“This study abroad experience is as a living lab that allowed students to experience concepts discussed in class,” said Klyueva. The group’s base for this program was at a 19th–century manor house located at the University of Evansville’s Harlaxton College.
“I had an opportunity to learn the rich history that has made up this beautiful and resilient country, broaden my knowledge, and–most of all–push myself out of my comfort zone,” said Nhu Tran, a student who participated in this faculty-led trip.
A former international student herself, Klyueva said, “I knew the importance of global experiences and how they can shape the trajectory of one’s life.”
“The most valuable outcome was the way the experience deepened their sense of community and empathy,” said Klyueva, “empathy to understand alternative perspectives.”
“It was different from learning on campus because it was more hands-on,” said student Joy Sexton of her experience participating in the summer program. “The Education Abroad office was helpful in answering questions when I had doubts or concerns.”
“They made sure we were prepared mentally for the trip, as the intensity of the program and some culture shock were to be expected.”
Participating in the Education Abroad program is an option available to all UHCL students. According to the EA&SS, “If you partake of an official UHCL faculty-led program, you will receive UHCL credit for courses taken abroad.” EA&SS advisor, Brittany Hamilton, said, “There are resources and opportunities for students to take advantage of.”
