UHCL has a special room in the Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC) made to help students de-stress.
With finals approaching, many students feel increased anxiety and tension. The Mind Spa is a specialized room that students can book for 30 minutes to an hour once a week.
The Mind Spa is a low-lit space filled with items meant to help visitors relax. Monica Martinez, outreach coordinator for the CMHC, provided a list of the room’s features.
“We have massage chairs, coloring books, blankets, and yoga mats.”
Soft music plays in the background, a galaxy projector lights up the room with stars, and a jar of lavender with small take-home sachets immerses the spa’s occupants in aromatherapy. Several blankets are also available on the shelves for use.
“We created it as a quiet, tranquil space for students,” Martinez said. She also highlighted the Biofeedback technology available in the room.
The device tracks a person’s biological state through a sensor clipped to the earlobe, then offers tips to help users reach what Martinez describes as “me in a calm state.”
The goal is to help students recognize what true calmness feels like, learn how to return to that state, and eventually achieve it without assistance from the program.
Cleaning wipes are available to sanitize equipment before and after use. Pantyhose are also provided for students who are not wearing socks.
The Mind Spa is located in the CMHC on the third floor of the Student Services and Classroom Building, Suite 3103. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are preferred for consistent access.
The Mind Spa is open during CMHC’s working hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for Tuesday-Friday. For questions, you can contact the CMHC at 281-283-2580.
