Psychological Services Clinic offering free mental health screenings this Friday

The UHCL Psychological Services Clinic (PSC) will be holding a free walk-in mental health screening event for all to attend on Friday, Oct. 10 in honor of World Mental Health Day.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the UHCL PSC in Arbor Building South, where parking passes for non-UHCL attendees will be provided through the designated visitor parking spots closest to the building’s entrance.

Though no appointments are necessary, anyone seeking to fit their approximately half-hour-long screening into a busy schedule should know that they can call the PSC office at 281-283-3330 to reserve a time in advance.

The screenings will be staffed by students in the PSC’s master’s and doctoral graduate programs, all of whom are supervised by licensed mental health professionals, like Director of the Psychological Services Clinic, James Upright, Ph.D.

“This area–and Houston generally–is designated as a shortage area for mental health services and mental health professionals,” said Upright, “so we’re here for the broader community.”

Upright made it clear that, while the psychological screenings provided on World Mental Health Day will be free, the PSC’s other services, including counseling, do require payment on an income-based sliding scale. Though the PSC is often initially confused for the Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), a provider of free counseling services for all currently enrolled UHCL students, these are two separate organizations.
