Opinion: “Night of the Living Dead” is still the scariest movie to watch during Halloween

With Halloween around the corner, there is no better time to watch George A. Romero’s (1968) Night of the Living Dead.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, the movie stands out not because it’s guts and gore but because of the fear it instills.

From the opening cemetery scene where Johnny (Russell Streiner) tells his sister Barbra (Judith O’Dea) “He’s coming for you!”  viewers are transported to a world of uncertainty.

This uncertainty is no clearer than when Karen Cooper (Kyra Schon) is transformed into a human-eating monster after being bitten by one of the zombie-like ghouls.

The fear of the unknown fate our protagonists will meet continually grows as the movie progresses.

And nothing instills fear more than being surrounded by a horde of ghouls with no way out. The leading character Ben (Duane Jones) is placed into this situation after a seemingly-brilliant plan fails.

Fortunately, Ben narrowly escapes by kicking down a farmhouse door and lives to fight a few more hours.

And just when the situation seems like nothing can get worse, it does. A ghoul apocalypse that is scary enough to make you press pause and turn your lights on commences.

If you dare to be scared and have not seen Night of the Living Dead, this Halloween would be the perfect time.
