The Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society UHCL chapter is currently collecting new and gently used books from faculty, staff and students until March 27 to support their upcoming “Mystery Date with a Book” fundraiser.

The Book Drive and Fundraiser

Any interested in donating are open to give from a wide range of genres and age groups, including but not limited to: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, children’s, middle-grade, and YA books.

One class of books that are not being requested are course textbooks.

The subsequent fundraiser will take place on April 8 with the goal of helping fund STD activities, such as travelling to the 2026 national Sigma Tau Delta convention in New Orleans, student tickets to performances at The Alley Theatre, and assistance with $45 – $60 membership fees for new members.

“Access to books is foundational to Sigma Tau Delta’s mission,” shared the UHCL chapter faculty sponsor, Associate Professor of Literature Anne Marcoline, Ph.D.

Marcoline mentioned last year’s donation drive netted the chapter over 200 books, a number they hope to surpass this time around.

Books may be dropped off in the donation box outside Marcoline’s office, SSCB 2109.03.

An international organization of over 850 chapters, STD is an academic honor society dedicated to the preservation and advancement of the English language. Now in its 37th year at UHCL, STD provides its members with access to scholarships and internship opportunities as well as an honor stole at their graduation ceremonies.

In addition to these academic opportunities, STD holds an annual Spring convention and offers current members the opportunity to win awards for submissions of their written work to various contests held periodically throughout the year.

Karolyne Ochoa, former President of the UHCL STD chapter, placed second in a nation-wide Hispanic Heritage Month poetry contest sponsored by STD in 2024. Marcoline hopes to continue making opportunities like these even more accessible to students down the road.
