MIXED SIGNALS: We’re changing our name back to The UHCLidian

Reject Modernity, Embrace Tradition

After weeks of deliberation, The Signal staff has made the difficult decision to abandon the name after a 19 year-long run.

Why we made the change

Originally sparked by our staff’s recent trip to the 2026 TIPA Convention, the question of why our (soon-to-be former) name was so far removed from the student population’s identity was raised.

We didn’t have much of an answer.

Among the other publications and student media orgs with names like “The Rider” (UTRGV), “The Collegian” (TCC), and “The Daily Texan” (UTAustin), the name “The Signal” felt a bit too…remote.

And so we began to brainstorm, keeping UHCL’s NASA roots in mind.

Names like “The Astronaut”, “The Satellite”, and “The Orbiter” were tossed around, but none really stuck or felt like they resonated with those who matter most: our fellow students.

What about the new Logo?

The new logo is great, honestly. But it’s clear to us now that it was, at best, a Band-Aid solution to a much deeper, more serious issue surrounding our name. At worst, we’d rather not say.

So, we will have to say goodbye to the truly wonderful design.

Welcome back UHCLIDIAN

Bringing things back to our new-old identity, centering the students of UHCL is our top priority.

And because of that, when taking into consideration the other publication names we admire, it was clear to see that the perfect name had been sitting in plain sight the entire time.

A name representative of the UHCL student: The UHCLidian (pronounced Euclidian).

We’re glad to be back, and we’ll see you again soon.
