The Stars and Stripes have shown signs of success, but can they win the worlds game?
The United States, Canada and Mexico are hosting the World Cup this summer. The U.S. soccer team will be playing in Seattle for their games, but are the Stars and Stripes ready to face the world’s best?
The United States of America has always been known for sports such as baseball, American football and basketball. However, the country is not known for the world’s most widely played sport–soccer (football).
U.S. soccer has always been, historically, a mediocre program. The team has made appearances in the World Cup but always falls short and exits in the Round of 16. The best the team has finished was when the U.S. placed third in the 1930 Uruguay World Cup.
The worst showing in recent memory was when the team failed to qualify for the 2018 Russia World Cup.
Recently, the U.S. soccer team has been playing international friendlies, and things are getting interesting. The U.S. team has won matches against both Japan and Australia, as well as tied with Ecuador. They have two more upcoming matches against Paraguay and Uruguay set for this November.
Taking this into account, the U.S. has the potential to do great, the main concern is mostly with the individual players themselves, and whether they are World Cup ready. The team together can perform well, but it may not be able to go further because the other, more experienced players will be tough. Historically good teams and players know what to do when it comes to elimination games, and the U.S. team is young and inexperienced.
There is hope that they can make it to the World Cup finals. But improvement is needed, and the team needs to play against tougher competition soon, so they can perform when it matters.
