Indian Student Association brings Diwali to campus this Friday

The upcoming UHCL Diwali festival, hosted by the Indian Student Association (ISA) in collaboration with the Board Game Association (BGA), will give international and local students an opportunity to connect by sharing in dance, music, food, and activities.

“Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated festivals in India and across many cultures around the world,” says the President of ISA, Abha Karira.

Diwali is the celebration of light triumphing over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

A key aspect of the celebrations involves participants illuminating their homes and temples with candles and lanterns, and celebrating with feasts and fireworks.

“It is a time that brings together families and communities in joy, reflection, and gratitude,” says Karira.

This year’s Diwali festival will take place Nov. 7 from 6 -10 p.m. at the UHCL Recreation Center.

“Guest can look forward to a full Indian meal,” says Karira, “including a chaat bar, a station offering popular Indian street foods known for their mix of sweet, spicy, tangy, and crunchy flavors and textures.”

Activities will include a traditional Aarti (lamp lighting) ceremony, henna art, photo booths, game tables, and a DJ dance session.

“We invite students, faculty, staff, and local community members, to join us for this vibrant evening,”  says Karira. “Whether you’re familiar with Diwali or experiencing it for the first time, this event offers something for everyone and truly embodies the spirit of light, community, and joy.”
