“I See Eye Spots”: the UHCL Art Gallery’s current exhibition

Important Info

The UHCL Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition entitled “I Spot Eye Spots” by local artist Mark Greenwalt from now until Feb. 27.

The gallery is free and open to all on campus, and will be hosting a closing ceremony for the exhibition on Feb. 25 with Greenwalt in attendance.

Who is Mark Greenwalt?

A Texas native, Greenwalt is both an art professor at College of the Mainland and instructor at The Glassell School, and has had exhibitions displayed at Hooks-Epstein Galleries in Houston, the Galveston Art Center, and the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, Texas, in addition to others, according to his website.

This latest exhibition of Greenwalt’s is a collection of works that leaves much room for interpretation, featuring a variety of paintings and sketches depicting anatomically distorted figures along with warped architecture and landscapes.

My Thoughts

The wide assortment of recognizably human subjects lends the exhibition a much more accessibly intimate quality than other collections of work.

In spite of the often grotesque appearance of the figures on display, they’re still people. And every person passing through, no matter their level of interest for art, can resonate with that visible person-ness of these funky little creatures.

While I am by no means the most art-acquainted person, I was still able to walk through the exhibition, take in the way the human form was bent, twisted, molded and re-molded, then point to one and say “yes, that one’s like me.”

And here that one is.

What it says about me, I’m not sure. But what I do know is that it resonates with me, and based on the sheer amount of figures all throughout the exhibition, every visitor who stops by would be able to find one that does the same with them.
