Every step counts with the “Houston Heart Walk”

The Houston Heart Walk returns on Saturday, Oct. 25, to bring the community together around raising awareness about cardiac arrest and promoting better health habits through a noncompetitive 5K event hosted by the American Heart Association (AHA).

“The Heart Walk is part of a century-long tradition,” said Tracie Morden, Vice President of Development for the AHA in Houston.

“It’s a movement dedicated to saving lives and improving heart health across the nation.”

Each year, more than 350,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital, with very few of them getting the immediate assistance they require. While it may not seem like anyone outside of a healthcare professional could do much to meaningfully help in these kinds of moments, taking quick action, such as performing CPR, can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival–something the AHA hopes every member of the community can learn to be prepared for.

While the Houston Heart Walk has been ongoing since 1992, the organization’s mission has been a nationwide effort for more than 100 years. Each year, thousands of walkers, families and local organizations gather to honor loved ones affected by heart disease and support ongoing research.

“Our mission is simple: to make everyone a lifesaver by teaching CPR and raising awareness about heart disease,” said Morden.

“We’re working to reduce cardiac arrest deaths, and this event brings us one step closer every year.”

In addition to the 5k, the event also serves as an opportunity to learn lifesaving skills. On-site booths will offer free blood pressure checks, CPR demonstrations and educational materials about recognizing the early warning signs associated with heart attacks and strokes.

“By getting educated, we equip ourselves with the skills to save lives,” said Morden.

Those unable to attend in person, but still interested in contributing to the AHA and Houston Heart Walk’s mission, can take part by advocating, donating directly to the event, volunteering at future events or even taking a CPR course online. The AHA website also provides resources on healthy living, heart disease prevention and ways to stay active year-round.

This is a great story and a hugely important part of helping people understand heart disease and heart health. That is a personal thing for me, hits close to home.

    Keep up the great reporting!
