Early morning fire blazes through decommissioned Bacliff Power Plant early Sunday morning

The decommissioned PH Robinson power plant fire in Bacliff, Texas drew widespread attention after a large plume of smoke rose over the Galveston Bay area early Sunday morning Nov. 16, prompting emergency crews from multiple agencies to respond.

The fire began inside the long inactive power facility located near Bayshore Drive. The blaze was reported shortly after 2:30am, and firefighters from Bacliff, San Leon, Kemah, and surrounding departments arrived within minutes.

Because the plant has been decommissioned for years, no employees were inside at the time. However, residents in nearby neighborhoods noticed the smoke quickly.

When crews arrived on scene, they were met with heavy flames fueled by leftover industrial materials and aged wooden structures within the plant.

Although the fire appeared intense, officials confirmed that no hazardous chemicals were stored inside the plant, and that air quality readings taken throughout the afternoon showed no immediate risk to the surrounding community.

By early evening, the bulk of the flames had been contained, though crews remained on site to monitor hot spots and ensure the fire did not reignite. No injuries were reported among firefighters or community members.

Local officials stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Because the building has been unused for years, investigators will be looking closely into whether debris, structural collapse, or unauthorized entry may have contributed.

To stay informed about updates on the ongoing fire investigation or future community safety announcements, residents can follow communication channels from Galveston County Emergency Management and local law enforcement.
