Christ’s Church partners with Houston Food Bank to serve its community

Christ’s Church has partnered with the Houston Food Bank for the past 7 years to host their biweekly Mobile Food Pantry at its Bay Area Boulevard location. The pantry helps distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to hundreds of families in the community facing food insecurity.

The next distribution will take place on Feb. 14, 2026, from 9-10:30 a.m. No ID is required; upon arrival, all one needs to do is check in with the Link2Feed Houston Food Bank app. Walk-ups are welcome starting at 9:30 a.m., but is on a first come first served basis.

The Mobile Food Pantry serves an average of 240 families—nearly 1,000 people—every two weeks, according to Diane Jones, associate pastor at Christ’s Church.

“We’re seeing various needs across the board,” says Jones. “Seniors choosing between food and medicine, families suddenly supporting multiple generations under one roof, and people who’ve lost jobs and are trying to get back on their feet. We’re meeting people in real crises.”

The partnership with the Houston Food Bank began in 2018, following church leaders’ exploration of new ways to serve their local community. Jones said the church had previously worked alongside a food pantry in Galveston for nearly a decade before shifting its focus closer to home.

“We felt called to reach a community near us,” Jones said. “When we learned about the mobile pantry option, it was phenomenal. We don’t have a kitchen or large storage space, so bringing the food directly to the church made it possible for us to serve sustainably.”

Christ’s Church currently maintains a long-term agreement with the Houston Food Bank, which is in effect through to 2030. Volunteers undergo annual training in food handling and civil rights compliance, and client data is collected through the food bank’s reporting system to meet USDA requirements.

Distributions are run in a drive-through format, a system adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic that the church has continued ever since. Jones says volunteers unload, sort, bag, and distribute up to 18,000 pounds of food per mobile unit, rain or shine.

“Hunger doesn’t go away when it rains,” says Jones. “So we don’t either.”

Beyond food distribution, the church also provides connections to additional local resources, including housing support, counseling services, and community ministries. Christ’s Church also hosts an annual back-to-school event where they provide new shoes to more than 220 children each August, all donated by congregation members.

“For us, this work is rooted in our faith,” says Jones. “Scripture calls us to feed the hungry and love our neighbors. When people come through our line, many feel hopeless. Sometimes they just need someone to listen, to tell them there is help and there is hope.”

Community members interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact the church in advance, as teams are coordinated for registration, traffic, sorting, and distribution. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially welcome.

“This is a true partnership,” says Jones. “The food bank needs us to help distribute the food, and we need them to make it possible. We’re just grateful to be able to serve our neighbors in this way.”

Glad to see and hear about these types of partnerships! The Dean of Students Office on campus also has a great partnership with the Houston Food Bank, to help support the Hawk Pantry for UHCL students.
