The Ceramics Society of UHCL held their annual “Empty Bowls” community ceramics event on Friday, Feb. 27 in the Arbor North building to help contribute to the Houston Food Bank’s (HFB) own 20th annual “Empty Bowls Houston” charity fundraising event.
Lasting from 5-7 p.m., “Empty Bowls” brought together university students and all other interested volunteers to throw 400 pounds of clay, donated for the event by the Ceramic Store of Houston, into bowls that will be sent off for purchase by those in attendance of “Empty Bowls Houston” once trimmed, dried, and glazed in the coming weeks.
The actual selling of all the collected bowls from around the greater Houston area will take place on May 16, at the Silver Street Studios at Sawyer Yards, and run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m..
At $25 per bowl, 100% of the proceeds of each purchase will go directly to the HFB, according to the event’s listing on the HFB website. Allison Abowd, President of the Ceramics Society of UHCL, says that a record-breaking amount was raised last year.
For the event’s 20th anniversary, hopes are high to raise even more.
