Alumni Plaza water fountain flows once again

The UHCL Alumni Plaza fountain is once again flowing after being out of operation for about a month due to a broken mechanism that regulates its water level, university officials said.

“The university ordered the necessary replacement parts earlier this month,” said Associate Vice President of Facilities Douglas Wells when asked earlier last week. In that same response, Wells also placed the expected date for restoration of the fountain’s water flow for Sept. 20.

Wells said the fountain could have operated during the downtime, but the facilities team opted to keep it offline to prevent potential water waste.

“We don’t want to risk it overflowing and wasting water, not to mention the fact that we would have to drain it again to repair the broken part,” said Wells.

The Alumni Plaza fountain is a signature visual feature on campus, often serving as a backdrop for student gatherings, alumni events, and graduation photos.

Its monthlong closure was noticeable to students and visitors alike, but with the repairs complete, the fountain has resumed its role as a place where students can sit and listen to the flowing water ease away the stress of classes and daily life.
